OVERVIEW:
My client is a leading London law firm with a distinctive approach and a commanding reputation within the technology sector, For the fourth year running, they were recognised by the Sunday Times as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For.
The firm has an IP team of 45 which deals with all aspects of intellectual property, from patent drafting and prosecution to EPO oppositions and litigation before the UK courts. They are the only full service UK law firm to combine patent attorneys with solicitors in this way and currently have five patent attorneys and three trainees who between them cover all technical areas.
THE ROLE:
The patent prosecution practice is growing rapidly and they are looking for a part-qualified attorney with a background in physics, electronics, IT, software or electrical engineering. Clients in this area include Fortune 500 and FTSE 250 companies. Career opportunities are excellent, and as a law firm they are very excited about the Legal Services Bill, which will allow patent attorneys formally to become partners in the firm.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include (but not limited to):
· Drafting patent applications for first filing in the UK, Europe or USA
· Patent prosecution before the UK IPO and EPO and Oppositions.
· IP analysis including freedom to operate and invalidity opinions.
· Liaising with direct clients and international attorneys.
· Providing support to commercial transactions and litigation.
· Undertaking legal research as and when required.
KEY REQUIREMENTS:
· Excellent academic record – minimum 2.1 (or equivalent), preferably a computer science,
engineering or physics degree
· Industry experience preferred but not essential
· Good technical ability and solid drafting skills.
· Attention to detail and thoroughness as important as a motivated and enthusiastic attitude.
